מאתיו סילבר הוא האידיוט המקצועי היחיד בעיר אורלי סנטו
מאתיו סילבר עומד ביוניון סקוור על רגל אחת, עושה קולות של עורב ומרים מעל ראשו, בתנועה של סגידה, דיסקית עגולה גדולה. הוא לובש בגד גוף צבעוני וחצאית טוטו, על אוזניו הוא חובש חזיה ורודה, וסביב מותניו כרוכים כמה זוגות תחתונים. “הסכיתו וראו!” הוא קורא בקול גדול, ומשליך את הדיסקית על הרצפה “מעגל החיים!”
זה מה שהוא עושה חמישה ימים בשבוע, שמונה שעות ביום. יש אינספור חובבנים בתחום הזה, אבל מתיו הוא האידיוט המקצועי היחיד בעיר.

מה… מה בעצם אתה עושה?“אני עושה שירות ליקום. אני מרפא את עצמי ומרפא את העולם בכך שאני מצחיק אנשים. במיוחד בניו-יורק, עם כל הלחץ, זה נורא חשוב שאנשים יצחקו קצת. לפעמים הם כל כך לחוצים שהם לא מבינים מה אני רוצה מהם בהתחלה, איך לאכול אותי, אבל כשאני מחייך אליהם הם קולטים: אה, הוא דווקא לא משוגע. הוא פרפורמר, הוא רק מנסה להצחיק”.
איך התחלת לעשות את זה?“תמיד הייתי ליצן הכיתה, אידיוט הכפר. תמיד נמשכתי לאנרגיה שהצחוק יוצר. יום אחד כשהייתי בתיכון – היינו באולם הספורט, בהפסקה, יושבים על הספסלים – מישהו אמר לי: ‘אני אתן לך דולר אם תיגש לבנות שם ותתחיל לעשות שטויות’. לקחתי את הדולר והתחלתי להופיע בפניהן. כל הבנות צחקו, אבל לא רק הן. כל מי שישב בספסלים שלידן התחיל לצחוק, וכל מי שישב בספסלים מעליהן, ובספסלים שמעל אלו. פתאום מצאתי את עצמי במרכז הפוקוס של אולם ספורט ענק, מצחיק את כולם, את הבנות, את החברים שלי, את כל התלמידים שאני בכלל לא מכיר, את המורים… זה היה רגע גדול עבורי. אני חושב שזה רגע שבו הבנתי מה אני רוצה רוצה לעשות בחיים, למרות שהתחלתי עם זה באופן מקצועי ממש רק אחרי הקולג’, בסאן פרנסיסקו. למדתי צילום וקולנוע בקולג’ בניו-יורק, אבל במהלך השנים גיליתי שאני לא נהנה מזה. אני שונא עריכת וידאו! כל היום להיות תקוע לבד בחדר, מול מחשב, לא לתקשר. אנשים מתוכנתים לאינטראקציה עם אנשים אחרים, זה לא בריא לחיות ככה. התחלתי להיכנס לדיכאון. הרגשתי שאני משתגע מבפנים, רק כשהתחלתי להתנהג כמו משוגע ברחוב הבנתי שזה מה יעשה אותי שפוי. אחרי הקולג’ הדבר הראשון שעשיתי היה לחצות את ארה”ב על אופניים. נסעתי מניו-ג’רזי עד סאן פרנסיסקו. לקח לי ארבעה חודשים. כשהגעתי בסוף לסאן פרנסיסקו, התחלתי מיד לעבוד בתור שליח אופניים, מה שהתגלה בדיעבד כצעד לא חכם. אחרי ארבעה חודשי רכיבה רצופים, נורא כאבו לי הברכיים… אז, לאט לאט, התחלתי להתנסות לראשונה עם הדמות הציבורית של שוטה הכפר. הייתי מסתובב בעיר בשמלת מלמלה לבנה וסניקרס עם שלט גדול שכתוב עליו: ‘תתעודדו, אני תרנגולת’. כשהיו מסתכלים עלי הייתי מכרכר כמו תרנגולת ומטיל ביצים. עם זה התחלתי להופיע גם בערבי מיקרופון פתוח”.

מה היה הרגע הכי קשה שלך בתור פרפורמר?“בסאן פרנסיסקו היה מקום אחד שנקרא ‘גבעת ההיפים’, מין פארק מלא בכל מיני טיפוסים צבעוניים, מהם הרבה שישנו וגרו בפארק. התחברתי איתם, אבל אף פעם לא הרגשתי שם לגמרי בנוח. אף פעם לא ידעתי בדיוק מה הם חושבים עלי. יום אחד, בזמן שהופעתי לפניהם, כנראה התקרבתי יותר מידי למישהו והוא נתן לי אגרוף בפרצוף! אני חושב שזה היה הרגע הכי קשה שלי בתור פרפורמר. זה, והשוטרים בניו-יורק, שקוראים לי לפעמים ‘מטרד ציבורי’. אבל אני מבין שהם רק מנסים לשמור על הסדר ולא לוקח את זה אישית”. מה הייתה פריצת הדרך שלך?“בחורף 2011 הופעתי ב’גוואנס בולרום’, חלל אמנות אלטרנטיבי ענק בשכונת גוואנס בברוקלין. המופע נקרא ‘התמוטטות עצבים ולידה מחדש’. שיחקתי בו יהודי חסידי שעובר התמוטטות עצבים. זה הלך ככה: אני עומד על הבמה ומתחיל להיות יותר ויותר עצבני, אז אני תולש מעצמי את הז’קט והכובע והבגדים, ונשאר על הבמה במין פיג’מה ארוכה. אבל אז אני שוב נהיה עצבני, אז אני מקלף ממני את הפיג’מה בהרבה דרמה ונשאר על הבמה בבגד ים של אישה. בסופו של דבר אני נשאר רק בתחתונים שלי, שמודבקת עליהם בננה”. מה היה הרגע הכי מאושר שלך?“בכל פעם שמישהו ממש נקרע מצחוק, כשמישהו צוחק מהבטן, אני מסתכל עליו ורואה שלא אני יצרתי את הצחוק, אני רק שחררתי אותו. הוא כבר היה שם בפנים. זה שיכולתי לעזור לו ולתת לו סיבה לצאת, זה שאני יכול לתת לאנשים איזו סיבה לאינטראקציה מפתיעה, זה תמיד משמח אותי”. |
